The Ultimate Guide to Lash Fills: What to Expect, How Often to Schedule, and When to Get a New Set

Discover everything you need to know about lash fills! Learn how these maintenance appointments refresh your eyelash extensions, how often to schedule them, and tips for keeping your lashes looking full and fabulous.

What is a lash fill?

A lash fill, also known as a lash refill, infill, or touch-up, is a maintenance appointment that involves removing and replacing old eyelash extensions with new ones to make your lashes look full and fresh.. During a lash fill, your lash stylist will:

  • Remove grown out lash extensions: Use a gentle adhesive remover to remove extensions that have grown out or manually remove the lash extension off of your natural lash.

  • Deep clean your lashes: Use a foaming cleanser and micro-swabs to clean lashes and remove makeup or debris.

  • Apply new extensions: Apply new extensions to fill in gaps caused by natural shedding.

During a fill, you can customize your look even further during your fill after your initial full set. If you want even more volume, you can ask your stylist if it’s possible to add extra lashes. If you’d like more length, you can also ask for that as well, vice versa.

Lash fills are typically recommended every two to three weeks. This is because people lose about 20% of their natural lashes every two weeks, and the extensions go with them. Getting regular lash fills helps keep lashes looking full and fresh.

Hope that helps! :)

How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?

Eyelash extensions are a great way to make your lashes look longer and fuller without using mascara every day. But you might wonder: How long do they actually last?

In general, lash extensions last about 3 to 4 weeks, but with proper care, they can stay looking good for up to 5 to 6 weeks. How long they last depends on a few important factors, which will be explain below.

What Affects How Long Lash Extensions Last?

1. How To Take Care of Your Lash Extensions

Taking care of your lashes is key to making them last. It’s important to keep them clean and avoid using oil-based products around your eyes because oils can weaken the glue holding the extensions. Use a gentle lash cleanser or micellar water to clean off dirt or makeup to keep your lashes healthy.

2. Getting Touch-Ups/Fills

To keep your lashes looking full, most lash technicians recommend getting touch-ups (also called infills) every 2–3 weeks. This fills in the spots where your natural lashes have shed, so you can keep that full, fluffy look without needing a complete new set of extensions.

3. How the Extensions Are Applied

The way the lash extensions are applied makes a big difference. If too much glue is used, your lashes might clump together, which can cause them to fall out sooner. On the other hand, not enough glue might mean they don’t stay on long enough. Going to an experienced lash technician can help ensure the extensions are applied properly for longer wear. During our appointment, I will take note of the porosity of your natural lashes and tailor how much glue and what products to use for optimal retention and wear.

4. Environmental Factors

Things like weather, temperature, and humidity can also affect how long your extensions last. Hot and humid weather, for example, can break down the glue faster, causing lashes to fall out. Heat, sweat, steam rooms, saunas, friction, and certain oils can all make the glue weaker too, so it’s a good idea to avoid these when possible. If you do get facials, I recommend getting them done before your lash appointment!

Thankfully to new product advancements, the products I use allow you to get your lashes wet immediately after we our appointment finishes! This only applies to lash extensions.

5. The Lash Technician’s Skill

The skill of your lash technician matters a lot. A professional lash artist with experience will know how to apply your extensions the right way, making sure they last as long as possible.

6. DIY Cluster Lashes vs Professional Lash Extensions

While you can buy kits to apply cluster lash extensions at home, they usually don’t last as long as professional individual extensions. A trained lash artist uses better glue and lightweight materials that are applied 1 by 1 that help your lash extensions stay on for weeks. Cluster lashes can be pretty heavy for the natural lashes to carry. They require more glue than individual lash extensions since they are applied to several lashes at once. The weight causes too much strain to your natural lashes and they may cause damage to your natural lashes by tugging them out prematurely.

In a nutshell, lash extensions usually last 3–4 weeks, but with good care, they can stay on for up to 5-6 weeks. The key is looking after them properly, getting regular touch-ups, avoiding oils, and choosing a skilled lash technician. If you want long-lasting, beautiful lashes, it’s worth investing in a professional service and sticking to the care routine.

Take care of them, and your lash extensions will keep you looking amazing for weeks!

Tips For Extending The Life Of Your Lash Extensions

Importance Of Regular Fills For Extending The Life Of Your Lash Extensions

Regular fills play a crucial role in extending the life of your lash extensions, acting as essential maintenance to keep them looking full and fresh. As natural lashes have their growth cycle, they will shed along with the attached extensions. Scheduling fills every two to three weeks allows for the replacement of lost lashes and the addition of new extensions to those that have grown out.

This process not only helps maintain a consistent, voluminous appearance but also prevents the remaining extensions from becoming sparse or uneven, ensuring a longer-lasting, beautiful set of lashes.

Tips For Maintaining Your Lash Extensions: Say No To Oil-Based Products

An essential aspect of maintaining your lash extensions involves steering clear of oil-based products. The reason behind this guideline is straightforward yet critical: oil-based cleansers, makeup removers, and even some skincare items can weaken the adhesive used for lash extensions, leading to premature shedding. This weakening occurs as the oil breaks down the glue's bond to your natural lashes, making it easier for extensions to slip off.

Opting for water-based alternatives not only preserves the longevity of your lash extensions but also keeps them looking fuller and more luscious for an extended period. You can use a lash bath to cleanse your lashes! Here is video on how to use your lash bath!

Avoiding Steam And Rubbing To Preserve The Longevity Of Your Eyelash Extensions

To safeguard the longevity of your eyelash extensions, it's crucial to avoid exposure to steam and refrain from rubbing your eyes. Steam can weaken the adhesive bond between the extensions and your natural lashes, leading to premature shedding.

Activities such as hot showers, saunas, or cooking over steamy pots should be minimized or approached with caution. Similarly, rubbing your eyes can not only break the delicate lash extensions but also contribute to their faster fallout.

Gentle handling and protecting your lashes from excessive moisture or friction will ensure they remain beautiful and intact for a longer period.

Proven Strategies For Maximizing The Lifespan Of Your Eyelash Extensions

To maximize the lifespan of your eyelash extensions, it's crucial to adopt a dedicated care routine. Implementing a gentle cleansing regime, using oil-free products, helps in maintaining the bond between your natural lashes and the extensions. Additionally, minimizing physical contact or rubbing your eyes will prevent premature shedding.

Sleeping on your back can also significantly reduce friction against pillows. Embracing these proven strategies will not only enhance durability but also ensure your lash extensions retain their aesthetic appeal longer.

The Importance Of Brushing And Detangling Your Lash Extensions

Maintaining the beauty and longevity of lash extensions goes beyond the initial application. An essential aspect is the regular brushing and detangling of these delicate additions. This routine not only keeps them looking pristine and natural but also prevents the lashes from intertwining, which can lead to unnecessary tension and potential fallout. Gentle brushing with a clean, soft-bristled lash brush can disperse natural oils evenly along the extensions, ensuring they remain healthy and intact.

By incorporating this simple step into your daily care regimen, you significantly enhance the durability and appearance of your lash extensions, maximizing your investment in your beauty routine.

How To Protect Your Lash Extensions During Sleep

To safeguard your lash extensions during sleep, mindful practices are essential. Opt for a silk or satin pillowcase; these materials cause less friction against your lashes compared to cotton, reducing the risk of tangling and breakage.

Additionally, sleeping on your back is preferable as it prevents direct pressure on the extensions, helping them maintain their shape and integrity for longer. Embracing these habits not only enhances the longevity of your lash extensions but also contributes to their overall appearance, ensuring you wake up with beautiful, well-preserved lashes every morning.

Classic vs. Hybrid vs. Volume Lash Extensions: How to Choose the Right Style for You

Looking for the perfect lash extensions in Atlanta? Learn about the differences between classic, hybrid, and volume lash extensions and how to choose the right one for you in our latest blog post. Whether you're new to lash extensions or a seasoned pro, our guide will help you make an informed decision and achieve the perfect look. Trust us to provide expert advice and high-quality lash services in Atlanta.

Are you wondering about the differences between Classic, Volume, and Hybrid eyelash extensions? Curious to know which one is best for you? In this article, I'll provide you with insights to help you understand the meaning of each type of lash and determine which option is most suitable for you.

Classic Lash Extensions

The Classic eyelash extensions are a traditional form of eyelash extensions that can create a natural, mascara-like effect by adding extra length, definition, and curl. This technique involves attaching a single 1:1 extension to each natural lash, limiting the number of extensions to the number of natural lashes. Classic lashes work well for people with normal to abundant natural lashes that are thick and strong and desire a natural look. However, if you have sparse lashes and want to add more volume or density to your lash line, Classic lashes may not be the best option. Instead, you might want to consider Hybrid or Volume lashes.

Volume Lash Extensions

Volume lashes involve a specialized technique where multiple lashes are fanned out and applied to each natural lash using a ratio ranging from 2:1 (2D) to 10:1 (10D) for mega volume. A popular ratio is 3:1 or 4:1, which is also known as 3D or 4D lashes. These extensions are much finer and lighter than classic extensions, resulting in a denser, softer, and fluffier look. The volume of the lashes used increases with the ratio, and the thickness of the lashes used decreases to ensure that your natural lashes can support the weight of the extensions without damage.

Hybrid Lash Extensions

If you desire a fuller effect than Classic lashes but are not quite ready to try Volume lashes, Hybrid lashes are a great option. Hybrid lashes are a combination of Classic and Volume techniques, which offer the best of both worlds. They provide the definition of Classic lashes with the softness of Volume lashes.

This mixed technique is also ideal if you have a decent amount of natural lashes but have gaps or are recovering from a poorly applied set of lash extensions elsewhere. The volume fans in Hybrid lashes can cover minor gaps and create an even lash line.

“I am new to lash extensions, which type would be suitable for me?”

Many people prefer to begin with Classic lashes and then move on to Hybrid, then Volume lashes once they get used to having extensions. Volumes offer a dense, fuller, and fluffier effect. When deciding between Classic and Volume lashes, it's crucial to consider the health, strength, and thickness of your natural lashes, any gaps in your lash line, whether your natural lashes are thin and sparse, as well as the final effect and look that you desire to achieve. The ideal lashes for you are the ones that suit your personal style and make you feel confident and comfortable!
